About Deryn Oliver

Deryn Oliver British Voice Actor

‘You should be a voice actor’

How many times did I have to be told that before I acted on it? Goodness knows as even as a child my distinctive and confident voice was being noticed

In infant school in the 70’s I was complimented on my clear and confident speaking voice and throughout my school days in Shropshire I was regularly asked to be the narrator for assemblies and stage productions. I wasn’t great at science and maths, but I knew I had a talent for speech and voice acting.

Life went on and I worked in various industries - equestrian, animal welfare, and beauty therapy but I still had a little voice inside telling me that a more creative path was out there for me. then in 2017 I appeared on the quiz show Cash Trapped and my path into becoming a voice actor opened up.

Group of seven people posing together on a brightly lit stage with geometric light patterns and screens in the background.

During filming both the host Bradley Walsh, and the producer commented on the clarity of my voice. They suggested I could be great at voice over work.

Thrillingly, I won the show (can’t tell you how exciting that was!) and spurred on by their remarks, I did some research into the voice over industry, investing my winnings into training with Gary Terzza, professional equipment and setting up ‘The Quiet Room’ aka my home voice over studio.

Since then I has recorded numerous voice over projects including audiobooks, corporate videos and gaming characters for companies such as Merlin Entertainment, History Hit, Bosch, Soho House, Penguin Random House, Fern and even the United Nations.

Today I wake up excited to get behind the mic rather than behind the waxing station in my old salon. I still ensure I cheerfully listen to my clients first and then use my skills as a voice actor so I can make both of us shine bright

Reviews

  • Deryn was a joy to work with. She brought my story to life with all the whimsy, nuisance, and character choices required for the story. She went above and beyond. If a character whistled, she whistled. If a character burped, she burped. Her voice was the perfect fit. She also balanced a large number of voices with ease — and she nailed the dialogue.
